Meeting Wednesday 5th February
Post meeting ponderings ...
Many thanks to everyone who turned out on this ghastly morning – the dreadful weather doubtless contributed to our reduced numbers!
We had 4 invited guests at our breakfast today:
- Tim Chappell of WPA, providers of health insurance, who currently has a free offer for directors of small businesses;
- Colin Hearne of Barclays Bank plc, offering free floor space for pop-ups in Barclays banks;
- Richard James of Solicitors Title, accessible, committed and ethical lawyers; and
- Dan Williams of Flooring Force, Sherborne Ltd, purveyors of all types of flooring for domestic and commercial properties.
We hope that they enjoyed their time with us and will consider joining us in the future.
We also welcomed Matthew Wood of Orchard Estates, the only 24/7 estate agent in town, as our newest member and welcomed back Graham Pay, of Icon Business Solutions, who joined us in December but who has been unable to attend until today.
Our talk today was from Michele Frehe of Barclays Bank plc, a lover of travel, food, animals and live music! Michele has worked for Barclays for 30 years and, having had her own restaurant business, is well placed to empathise with and help local businesses to succeed. Her 'patch' covers Sherborne, Castle Cary, Sturminster Newton and Yeovil as well as many small towns in between. In the last year she has helped 47 businesses switch their banking to Barclays and arranged £2.7m of funding – signs that business really is picking up again.
Michele's talk and accompanying video introduced us to Barclays' new initiative, "Pingit", a smartphone app which allows users to pay for goods and services using a smartphone. This is an award-winning payment app for both individuals and corporate customers, as it can also be used for payment of your company invoices. Pingit is available to customers of all banks and, better still, it's free! She also brought starter packs for all of us. Barclays is organising a digital seminar later in the year (also free) and Michele will be advising EBBX members of the details at a later date.
Finally, Nick reminded us that, now there are over 30 members at most meetings, we need to keep our 1-minute talks to 1 minute and keep our final thanks and testimonials brief!
Hopefully you will all have taken a card from the hat – time now to fix up a meeting!
